Music and Lyrics

I’ve just watched Music & Lyrics, the Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore film about a has-been musician and a flower girl turned lyricist. The film isn’t earthshatteringly wonderful but I don’t think it set out to be. It is cute, feel good, and most importantly given the subject, it has a ridiculously catchy song as its backbone.

A while back I heard Colin Murray comment on his radio show that the Mystery Jets single Young Love had some similarity to the soundtrack to this film. I thought nothing of it at the time, but when watching the film I couldn’t help but think I’d heard the track somewhere before. Have a listen to the two tracks below and judge for yourself…

Hugh Grant and Haley Bennet – Way Back Into Love

Mystery Jets and Laura Marling – Young Love

Ps.

On a more superficial note:

Laura…. WHY?!

The witching hour.

So here’s what the bard has to say about the wee small hours that are to be my “day” for the week:

Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world: now could I drink hot blood,
And do such bitter business as the day
Would quake to look on.
[hAMLET Act III, sc. ii]

Or in my own experience of the night shift….

Tis now the very twitching time of night,
When playout whirrs and D3s spit tapes out
Confusion to this mind: now could I think not straight,
And do such muddled pondering as the day
Would quake to look on.
