1.2.3.4.5 Live

September 30, 2007 at 4:00 pm (Music, Personal)

This week I have been to a gig every night of the week. I’m shattered, but full of the joys of live music.
Here’s a run-down of the week in brief

    1. Monday: Buck 65 @ Bush Hall

With Mary and Mark Carter (facebook guy)
Canadian avant rap in a truly beautiful venue. If you have never been to Bush Hall then find a reason to go. It has chandeliers and a carpet so clean that everyone sits down to wait for the next act!
Buck 65 was on form as usual, with new tracks about an indestructible grave digger, his ex-boss (flash flash, watch the birdie) and all the old favorites like 463 and Centaur. He also treated us to a history lesson about “this day in history” and other ramblings. This guy is so interesting. Even if you don’t like “rap” go see him!

An unexpected bonus to the night was that a random Canadian guy who had joined the gig-going group on facebook came up to say hi to Mary and me and turned out to be really nice! My first real-life facebook experience.

    2. Tuesday: Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip @ The Scala

With Mary, Craig and Simon.
More hip-hop but this time from the UK side of things. Supported by I Shouted Gun (thought they were a lot better than they were), The Anomalies (funked up hip-hop, a bit 90s), Gideon Conn (weird but cute) and Mr Crowe (mind blowing beatboxer)

The headline act were on great form, with Hip-hop karaoke, Thou Shalt Always Kill and Scroobius being his normal self righteous self. Seriously though, these guys are rapidly taking the crown from Jurassic 5 as my most rated live act. They just make me have a great time and come out grinning, even though they can be quite serious.
The highlight though, was seeing Mr Crowe beatboxing whilst singing and beatboxing whilst playing harmonic. I was left speechless. Check out the end of this video:

    3. Wednesday:Beprepared presents: Destructo Swarmbots, Action Beat, Teeth of the Sea and Bromancer @ the Miller

With James S and James M
My first foray into being a promoter. We broke even. Action Beat were AWESOME. Destructo Swarmbots were mind bendingly loud, very appreciated by the crowd and they gave us all T-shirts and poster. How sweet! Bring on the next one – much more pop, at The Pool on 21st October.

    4. Thursday: Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Fanfarlo, Wet Paint @ The Buffalo Bar

With Steve and Dan.
Due to the Victoria line being lame we didn’t see the headline act.
Wet Paint had ace, angular, Bloc Party-esques tunes. They could do with honing the vocal though, as they sounded lazy in comparison.
Fanfario are allegedly David Bowie’s new favorite band. I’m a sucker for any band with a trumpet and these guys didn’t dampen my love of brass in bands. They had cutesy catchy indie tunes. I’d happily see them again.

    5. Friday: David Goo’s Variety Show @ Philbeach hall

With Steve and Dan
From better-than-kate-or-adele female singer songwriters and Jewish happy hardcore, to jazz with interpretive dance and story tellers talking about eyebrows. Baffling and hugely entertaining!

I’m a Hagelslag

September 20, 2007 at 2:22 pm (Uncategorized)

ruijterfruitx.jpgOr, more to the point, I’m a Hagelslag lover.

When I was little, there was a mythical product in my Nanna’s pantry called Frock-to-Hagel. AKA Vruchtenhagel, but I was only little. It was basically sugar sprinkles that you eat on bread or toast and had been brough back from my Ganggang’s (Grandpa’s) trip to Holland before I was born. I’m guessing that no one had checked the Use By date!

Mary heard me mention this one day and has ph_puurvlokken.gifvery kindly given me a box of Chocolade Vlokken, which is the chocolate version.

And so it was, dear blog reader, that on a chilly winter’s evening I haad chocolate on toast for my tea. It’s wrong, but it’s SO SO right.

OM NOM NOM.
