A Baptism by Fire: London / UK news
This morning “Police have disabled a car bomb containing gas cylinders in the heart of central London”.
As a London resident, this is obviousely of interest to me. By chosing to live in London I choose to accept the inherrant risks of living in a capital city, or to a lesser extent in any city.
There are various debates which rise in by head about
a) how scared people are about stuff like this and whether that is justified
b) whether a “suspicious device” and the “terror threat” is being jumped on as a result of past events and is likely to renew inter-racial suspicions (despite not having bee attributed to a religious / race group yet)
I may or may not have chance to air my views on this later. In the meantime though, the first thought that pops into my head is what a baptism by fire this is for the new Cabinet (esp Jackie Smith) and Prime Minister. Imagine being woken up at 1am in the morning before on the your first day in your new job and being told that you’ll be brieifing the nation’s, perhaps world’s, press about a supposed bomb attempt.
We are all so quick to crtiticise anyone in positions of authority, whether that be managers or Prime Ministers but we often forget the pressures that they are also under. Sometimes I’m glad that no-one’s life can really and truely be affected by my job!
In the meantime according to the Met Police these are the details so far. The press like to speculate about these things so for the moment I won’t be going on anything except what those boys in blue say!
Simple and less simple joys
Wow, I’m excited for three separate reasons.
1. Pretty technology.
I’m going over to the White-side and getting a mac. I’ve been saving for a while and I’m told that they are more Gill-proof so here’s hoping that it won’t succumb to my magnetic technology-breaking powers. Watch this space for the bouncing when it arrives and the inevitable rants as I get use to the new system.
2. Stationery.
I’m not sure if this is just a girl thing, but I get pretty excited about stationery. Not just your regular A4 pad, though there is something particularly enjoyable about starting a fresh note book (like a New Year’s resolution only in a more tangible form), but coloured pens, funky notebooks and stickers. In an unexpected moment of pure genius a fellow flame-head bought me a wonderful cut out card which looks like the London skyline and a mammoth clicky pen. You know the ones I mean, where you chose a different colour and click it down. This one has 5. Wow. My afternoon has been so much more colourful!
3. The Weekend.
I’m going to see my sister this weekend. Our planned Friday evening consists of Stationery (see point 2) in the form of making cards, a glass of something, and some mindless TV. Saturday is going to consist of girlie shopping with one of the few people that I feel comfortable shopping with and is actually patient enough to bear it and then some more sisterly gossip. Then, back to London to move flat. Again.

Gratuitous glastonbury post.
No I’m not there, and no, I don’t really want to be there. Is that so wrong?
I guess I’m just a wuss.
