The Hungry Ghost
The Hungry Ghost AKA Blake Chen
Describes himself as Weird Scary Trip Hop. There are some very Massive Attack moments in this album. Haunted is exaclty what it says on the tin – decidedly creepy, slow build and lots of little elements that keep you interested. It is mainly guitar based but definitely at the hip-hop electronica end of the spectrum in terms of genre.
I hadn’t picked out this song as my favourite because of the lyrics, but having read them on Blake’s site it just cements the decision. Have a look for yourself!
Saqqarah: “Frog-ressive Rock”
This has to be a new experience. French prog rock!
Well, they call it prog rock but I would class it as classic rock to be honest, maybe even hair metal. I have no problem with long pieces of music, or guitar solos, or even French people singing in English but this is just unnecessary. The solos are long for the sake of it and there is none of the stadium feel good of your classic 80s rock. I wish I could describe it better but I guess the only thing is to go listen for yourself.
Rings of age

A random thought.
What if humans were like trees and added a ring for every year they lived?
Plus points: It would certainly save those embarrassing moments when ASDA try to I.D me for buying wine!
Minus Points: On a practical note though I suppose that all the old people would end up with their hands dragging around on the ground! They could always put the rings in their shopping trolleys….
An obvious sort of beauty
Most people will always gravitate to an obvious kind of beauty. This is evident in art (paintings of picturesque views), music (the most catchy or easily listenable song) and people (the classical figure and symmetrical features). I had never really thought about it this but Flickr is an excellent case in point. Jim was joking about typical Flickr photos the other weekend when he came to visit. It seems to be the case that there is a certain kind of obviously arty photo that makes it onto the Interestingness section. I suppose this is because it works on how often and image is viewed and how many people have it as a favourite
Anyway, the round-about reason for this post is that Jim showed me a site which is one of many interesting uses of Flickr. It is called Flickeur. Leave it for a while to get going.
Caterpillars
My parents know me so well. When approaching 24 you’d assume that someone would want a grown up and classy cake. Oh no! A caterpillar cake is where it’s at. I had to take some into work so that I wouldn’t scoff the lot though, it tasted so good. I don’t know if anyone remembers the Sainsbury’s or Good Housekeeping or something birthday cake cook book, but it was a feature of my younger years and had a caterpillar cake which used to have green butter icing and used matchmakers for something! Anyway, it’s brilliant.
